Choosing the Best Office Chair

November 30th, 1999

Given the importance of the office chair in an employee’s life, it is really a needed task to choose the best office chair. A regular employee spends most of his days cooped up in the day’s task while sitting on top of that chair. This means that while it supports the body, given the wrong circumstances, it may also fail the body greatly, which will lead to having physical injuries. Here are a few points to consider when it comes to choosing the best office chair for you:

The Backrest. The best office chair always has a good backrest. It must be good enough to support your upper and lower back to avoid stress on the spine. The lower part of the backrest should provide firm support, while being curved slightly following the structure of our spine. An adjustable backrest is a plus since it will give you more options to make you feel comfortable.

The Seat. The office chair seat should be comfortable to the point that the user can just forget about it, that it exists. Once a person sits down, it should be comfortable enough to make that person comfortable in that position for a good eight hours of the day. If it becomes comfortable already in just an hour or so, this is not the right office chair. Make sure that there will be plenty of room for the thighs and the hips as well, and that the back of the legs does not rub against the edge of the chair. Not only is this uncomfortable, but it also means that the height of the chair is wrong for you. In this case, opt for the adjustable seats too.

The Armrests. Armrests may not always be required, but there is a significant amount of difference with its presence. Make sure that the armrests will not be too high for you, since this will only lead to pain. Get the chair with the most comfortable armrest.

The Chair Base. Consider the base that uses casters, or the small swiveling wheels that make the chair “roll” across the floor, and the point base too. A five-point base chair is what you should get, because it is proven to supply the best support.

The Material. Consider the material that is used for the chair’s upholstery. Vinyl, leather, cloth, and a lot of other materials are all dressed to the office chair because they all have their advantages. It is not only a matter of personal choice when it comes to the material, but to pricing as well. Which is more affordable, or even which is easier to clean in case of stains? Bear these points in mind.

Consider all of these and you will be sitting in the perfect office chair in no time.
